Weekly Roundup: 2016-01-05

First roundup of 2016 – let’s see who was out and about over the jump.

Happy new year!  Do you know that feeling over Christmas when you’re trying to be good but it backfires?  I bought my two year old nephew his very first jigsaw as a present – as usual my sister went mental.  She was yelling and screaming something about him being too young for power tools..?  Right then, let’s take a look at the results:

Massive congrulations to Kate Moffet and Nessa Agnew who completed the Marcothon during December.  They particupated by completing one run a day, every day during the month of December.

The challenge started in 2009 when Marco Consani challenged himself to run every day in November which inspired his wife Debbie to follow suit the next month.  There’s a first, a roundup with a little history lesson thronw in for good measure!

Run Forest Run: Kilbroney
The latest race in the Run Forest Run series took place in Kilbroney Park in County Down.  The course took participants through mud and water (and past tree roots) while taking in a long steady hill twice on the route:

259Kathy Mayhew00:58:50
268Geraldine Coyle00:59:47

365Jane Patterson01:05:08
355Pippa Maclaran01:04:38
388Jackie Robinson01:08:28

That is some great running by each and every club member!  I hope that you all took a well deserved rest after the race.  Also special mention to Friend of the Dubs Shirley-Anne Thompson, who finished in 303rd position in a time of 01:01:09 – fantastic work!  That course was particularly challenging, but I’ve also been asked to question: Where were all the male Dubs on Saturday?!  There’s always the next one.

New Year’s Day parkrun
Rounding off the festive editions of parkrun was the first run of 2016! For those in and around Belfast this meant the opportunity to run two parkruns on the same day, by completing the Comber (09:30 start) or the Waterworks (09:45 start) events before dashing to Stormont for the 11:00 start. The chilly morning brought with it ice – and the unfortunate late cancellation of the Waterworks event. Nonetheless we had some brave souls out in the cold:

James SHERIDAN00:24:34
Ronan O'FLAHERTY00:27:51Newbie PB!
James TRAINOR00:19:00Newbie PB!
Ryan LOVE00:22:27Newbie PB!
James SHERIDAN00:23:59New PB!
Heather BARON00:24:00
Nessa AGNEW00:24:26
Trevor MURPHY00:28:35Newbie PB!
Ronan O'FLAHERTY00:29:34

Great running by everyone, and what a cool way to send in the new year. Special nod to James S, who kicked off the 2016 in style with a brand new PB at the Stromont run. While newbie PBs on New Year’s Day came from Ronan (at Comber) and James T, Ryan and Trevor (at Stormont). Well done everyone, especially those who missed out on the double header with the cancellation of Waterworks due to ice.

Also, Stormont broke the record for the best attended parkrun in Northern Ireland on Friday morning (the previous record held by the Ormeau event was beaten by 74 runners).  Anyone who ran at 11am –  you’re all record breakers!

It was a dull and damp Saturday morning, in contrast to the icy conditions from Friday morning.  The parks around the country sprung to life for the first Saturday parkrun of the new year, and we had an Errigle of Dubs take part:

Roisin BYRNE00:24:35
Paul Patrick MCCREA00:25:08
James SHERIDAN00:24:44Newbie PB!
Heather BARON00:24:06First Female!

That was quite the Errigle of Dubs taking on the first, normal parkrun of 2016 – start as we all mean to go on!  Excellent running from everyone, special mentions this week to Heather who was first across the line at the Stormont event and to Nessa who was the third finished at Ormeau.  Only the one newbie PB on Saturday came from James (at Valley).

That is it for the first roundup of 2016 – I hope you all had a great new year!  The club is back to normal this week – so no excuses folks!  So, new year, new resolutions and this year I’ve decided that my resolution is to make one joke about furniture a day – sofa, so good!

Keep on running!

Live long and prosper.
