Weekly Roundup: 2017-12-19

We have a 200th parkrun, a forest run and some cross country over the jump!

Winter has well and truly taken a hold this past week – and that’s okay this time because it just makes us feel a little more Christmassy! Plenty to get served up this week, but before we get to it, I asked the missus what she wanted for Christmas – she told me “Nothing would make me happier than a diamond necklace…” I can’t wait to see her face on Christmas Day when she sees I bought her nothing! Right then, let’s see what we’ve been served with:

Christmas Party
We hope you all enjoyed our Christmas Party on Saturday evening (and Sunday morning)!! Massive thanks to Jane for her awesome organisational and presenting skills – it was one hell of a good night. We gave out some prizes:

Wava League Female WinnerCollette McCourt
Wava League Male WinnerSteven Todd
Club Woman of the YearBernadette O'Kane

Well done to the four and to everyone for their support and dedication to the club throughout the year. Our festivities aren’t over yet – it is the annual Christmas Market Run this evening! Happy Christmas everyone!!

Bernie, Steven & Collette with their awards! Missing, Luke Skywalker.

Flashmob parkrun: Stormont
With a thaw on, it was a bit of a shock to the system to wake to find (yet again) ice on the streets. Luckily, Stormont, with its unique mixture of tarmac and trail paths was able to go ahead as planned. I think that we had enough Dubs out there on Saturday morning to qualify it as an “Errigle of Dubs”.  Plus, we had a special celebration this week, as our very own Nessa Agnew was completing her 200th parkrun event (her biographer informs me that her first parkrun was on 19th November 2011 in Victoria), and when she crossed the line today she clocked up 1,000k around parks on a Saturday morning:

Great work everyone – and that was just for getting there and surviving the carpark and walk to the estate grounds! Joking aside, fantastic running and lovely to see so many out for the final flashmob of 2017.  Now, let’s grab your Santa hat and let’s get tipping it – Clare was second home setting a newbie PB at the same time!  Despite the conditions we had a few new course PBs set by Suzy and Marie McC!  Finally, we had a sleigh load of newbie PBs – Brian D, Mark H, Marie S, Ronan McC, Valerie and Kate who all set their benchmark times!  We have a selection box of images from our final flashmob of 2017 gallery below:

Run Forest Run: Kilbroney
The increasingly popular series moved to the scenic surrounds of Rostrevor and Kilbroney Park (home of the parkrun too!). A slog of a 10k course consisted of two loops of the forest, including a trip up the side of Slieve Martin – who said forests can’t grow on the sides of mountains?! With wooded trail paths mixed with a very cold morning made it a “tough tun” (I’m pretty sure that was meant to say run though). Let’s take a look at how our Dubbers got on:

Great running folks – you really sleighed the competition out on the course! Impressive times over rough and tough terrain – plus let’s not forget that ‘hill climb’ at the half way point of the loop either (which means they did it twice!) All in a day’s work for our Dubs – home with time to rest before the Christmas Dooo too 😉 There’s a bit of a rest before the next race in Tollymore Forest Park on Saturday 6th January 2018! Now, let’s have a look at some of our bucks taking part in the race at the weekend:

Our Deer Dubs: Karen, Anna & Jane!

Waterford Novice XC
One Dubber sat out the Christmas party in favour of a relaxing evening in before heading to Waterford for a very angry country event. 6000m sounds like no distance at all, four 1500m laps – each with an obligatory massive hill was the muddy, grassy course that awaited. In pretty decent conditions there was, of course, only one man for the job:

Cracking effort Mr Trainor, along with your North Belfast Harrier chums! He even tells me that it was worth the effort of missing the Christmas party (I don’t believe him on that one). Never one to make things easy for himself, yes in the photo below he is (once again) holding his show that came off – only this time it happened at the final corner, and he crossed the line one shoe down. What a trooper, expect more XC racing from him in the new year. In the meantime can anyone spot our James?!

Anyone spot James in this photo?!

An icy start and being away from Belfast for the flashmob in Stormont can only mean one thing – you guessed it, other club members ran some other events! Despite the frosty start cancelling a few events and making driving conditions difficult, that didn’t deter two Dubs from braving the elements and going for it:

Mark MCGOWAN00:20:24New PB!
Neil CURRAN00:25:30---
Sligo (Ireland)
Kathy MAYHEW00:26:09---

Great going Mark Mc, Neil and Kathy – representing the Dubs outside of Belfast – and doing yourselves proud.  Now get home and get wrapped up warm please!  Just one tip of the Santa hat to Mark Mc for setting a new course PB at Ormeau event.  If anyone is interested there is a list of parkruns running on Christmas and New Year’s Day.  Advanced warning: members of the club will be doing the double header parkrun on New Year’s Day: Stormont at 9:30am and Ormeau at 11:00am – we hope to see you there!

The next roundup will be out on Boxing Day – so keep your eyes peeled for that festive edition (races don’t take holidays, so neither do I!) If you’re doing any races of the festive season, especially ones that you think I might miss – please get in contact with me to let me know. Don’t forget your phone for a quick photograph too – after all we need proof that you did the race!! With the recent snow, a lot of the kids where I live have been building snowmen and other night I overheard one of them talking to the other asking “Do you smell carrots?”

Live long and prosper & Happy Christmas!!!

Disclaimer: Every effort was taken to ensure the results above are correct (I’m just too excited about the Christmas Market Run!!!). If you’d like to make a complaint, then you’ll automatically volunteer yourself for writing duties next week 🙂
