Weekly Roundup: 2019-09-03

It’s all about the Waterside, Laganside and the parkruns this week over the jump!

Warmup
Meteorologically the summer is over. Sorry, I wanted to start on a good note this week, but them are the facts! As we run head first into autumn, there’s still plenty of time and races to ensure we uphold our self-styled PB Club of the Year title – and we’ll be here to cover every twist and turn and ensure you get your name in lights! I had a bit of time off there and decided to start investing in stocks – mainly beef, chicken and vegetables. One day I hope to be a bouillonaire. Shall we get this party started?

Wedding Bells
Congratulations to member Catherine Baillie who married Peter Ruck on Saturday afternoon.  From everyone at the club we wish you many years of happiness together.

Waterside Half Marathon
It’s funny how a tweak of a route can help boost the popularity of a race! Gone are the days of dull industrial estates and perimeters of airports. Replaced with iconic sights of the Foyle Bridge, the Peace Bridge and scenic greenways overflowing with support. We had one Dub taking part:

You were looking strong when you were pushing it past me at the half way mark – fantastic time! Ideal running conditions with a mix of sun levelled our with the occasional shower to ensure a coolness was never too far away. While it’s a beautiful route – it isn’t easy, but you made it look that way! Home in time for a bite of Sunday lunch too! Well done sir!

Laganside 10k
It must be September if this race is on! As popular as ever, this sell-out race in Ormeau Park takes in Ravenhill Road, Albertbridge Road, Lagan towpath, Ormeau Bridge and Ormeau Embankment – twice! It is (reasonably) flat and (reasonably) fast and always popular locally.  We had a rake of Dubs out in blue and doing… well, see for yoursleves:

What a turn out by the club – and you can help but be impressed by each and every one of you who ran. Despite the slightly bananas start (“start running!”) that didn’t stop Steven T, Jim L, Collette, Rob, Stephen M, Roisin and Marie S all setting some awesome new 10k distance personal best times. Outstanding efforts from everyone taking part! We had a trusty camera on the scene too:

parkrun
If you woke before 9:30am on Saturday, you’re forgiven for heading straight back to bed – with the rain pounding and not taking its time coming down. The story across all the local parkruns seems to be the same – once it rolled over to half past nine, the rain stopped, and the parkrun took place in the sun! Someone’s looking out for us weather wise – I’d say that’s Barra Best! Let’s see who was out and how they got on:

Nessa AGNEW00:23:462nd Place!

We may have been smaller in numbers this weekend at parkrun – but having no less of an affect – brilliant everyone! We have some hat tipping to be getting on with, as second on the podium was Nessa at the Dundalk event while Alastair R took the final step on the Queen’s podium. Our new PBs this week, both set at the Victoria event, weren’t just course PBs, but they were brand spanking new all-time 5k personal best times ever for Rob and Julia – magic running folks.

  • parklife: All-time 5k PB for Rob (centre, back) at Victoria)!

Cooldown
We need to talk about the Belfast Half Marathon – I think about half the club is in for this one as it is, but if you missed out then listen up! As announced over the weekend, 400 additional places will be released this coming Sunday, 8th September – be sure to read the press release for full details. Before putting it up on eBay, I have a broken barometer for sale if anyone would like to buy it from me? No pressure.

Live long and prosper.
