Dub All Star #23: Catherine Ruck

From singing runs to marathon runs and everything in between. Meet our latest All Star Catherine!

When did you start running?
I started running when I came back from university and had a lot of free time. So I signed up for the Belfast marathon in 2012 with no training and pretty much hated it! I started doing the park runs with a friend a few months after that and I’ve been hooked ever since.

Why did you start running?
I started running after I came back from from university and I wasn’t in the best shape! I’ve never enjoyed the gym so I decided to start running because all you needed was a pair of trainers. Some of my friends were convincing me to sign up for races and I just enjoyed the feeling after a run.

What is a typical training week for you?
Pre-lockdown I would go to the gym on a Monday for a HIIT workout and do weights, Tuesday was a speed session with the Dubs, Wednesday was an easy run around 4 miles, Thursday was a run of any length if I could fit it in! Friday was rest day. On a Saturday I would try and get 6 miles in and then do a park run after as my long run for the week. Sunday was an easy 10k.

Bitta crosscountry no bother for Catherine!

What is your favourite Dub training session?
Probably the Sunday run route because it’s so scenic and beautiful. Not as keen on the hills though!

parkrun is a favourite of Catherine’s, here she is at Orangefield!

What has been your favourite race(s) to take part in?
I really enjoyed Damnbusters half marathon which was the first race I did with the Dubs. The runher coastal 10k is also a favourite because of the beautiful views. One of my major highlights was doing the Lanzarote half marathon. It was my first race abroad and I got a pb! I also have to mention Dundrum 8 mile, because it’s a great one to do with the club and there’s always a good turn out.

What are you running goals?
To get a sub 20 minute 5k and to get a sub 1:40 half marathon – but mainly just to keep active and enjoying running.
